Good way to start Day Two, boys -- Michael Bush, RB, Louisville.
If that leg heals and he gets back to form, this guy could be an absolute STEAL at 4.

NFL DRAFT WEEKEND!!
One of my favorite weekends of the year. Too bad I'm six hours ahead of it all, so it'll be a couple of consecutive late nights for me, but at least poker last night into the wee hours tossed my rhythm off (proof positive: I woke up at quarter to 11 on a Saturday morning; latest I usually go is around 8:30, and much more often I'm up before 8).
Raiders at 1 -- in every round.
My predictions:
- They'll either trade down (which I consider pretty unlikely) or take Calvin Johnson at 1
- They'll unload Randy Moss for a 3 or a 4
- They may even dump Jerry Porter for a 4 or a 5 (the two would be something of a loss, given that they cost a 1 and a 2, resp., but addition by subtraction is better than throwing good money after bad -- or letting these two boneheads sour your team any longer)
If the above scenario plays out, it could be quite good. There is plenty of potential talent in the lower half of the draft, and a team like Oakland -- who has to rebuild no matter how enthusiastic a face the coach puts on everything -- has the time to get some lower-round players coached up.
2006 yielded 4 starters, including, most prominently, Thomas Howard. Could 2007 be the year of Calvin Johnson and Tony Ugoh/Jarvis Moss/Ben Grubbs and and and?
We'll see in a few long hours!

The Dodgers off the L-Streak
Yeesh -- at least the losing streak is over, and it's nice stealing one like that from the Pads.
Poker last night -- two records set. First, I lost all of mt 10E buyin, making it by far my worst night ever. I was down 18 at one point, and I was up as much as 5 -- neither particularly good. Just wasn't to be.
The other record was a friend of ours who bought in at 10 and cashed out at 46.80. GODDAMN, THAT was a nice night. My luck took a permanent turn to the south when, after winning five of seven hands, I then held the second-best hand four straight pots -- and good second-best hands, too -- the kinds that kill you because you're reluctant to give them up. Sucked, but I lost the mojo and couldn't get it back.
Still, pretty fun. :)

SWEET!
Got my first invite to a major international conference today -- this is very different for me than submitting a paper or panel abstract. They came after ME.
ROCK!

Randy Wolf
Randy Wolf K'd 10 last night and hit a two-run double in the third inning, which saw the Dodgers bat around.
Damn. That's one hell of a night from your pitcher!
12-5!

Purchased New Music:
Last week I noted that I discovered that ITunes has a surprising variety of things that I've been wanting to hear. Granted, not everything -- no Ildjarn to be found, for example, but a good bit.
Downloaded three discs last night:
King Diamond: Conspiracy
Boris: Pink
The Axis of Perdition: Deleted Scenes from the Transition Hospital
Haven't had much of a chance to listen to anything yet. I wanted to add the new stuff to my IPod and listen today, but I forgot that I never rebuilt my IPod list when we had to slick and rebuild the hard drive.
Conspiracy is a belated replacement of the disc -- one of the few cds I've ever physically broken (and boy was I ever pissed). Listened to "At the Graves" a few times and ran through the whole disc once this morning -- I still rank it where I did before, right in between "Them" and "Abigail." Just great, great stuff on that disc. Still don't much like the second track, though.
The other two -- cursory listens to a track off of each. Looking forward to digging in more deeply.

NFL Schedule released today:
Can someone explain to me how it is that my beloved Raiders -- the worst team in the league last season -- drew the hardest schedule?
I'm at a loss.

Seven games into the season ...
And the Dodgers are one over. Good enough -- projected over a full season (yeah, I know, but still), that's not a bad overall record.
Things to like:
- Pitching is settling in and getting outs. I was particularly impressed by Randy Wolf the other night -- two god-awful innings that he miraculously escaped from with only 1 ER, and then four fantastic innings. Granted, SF has shown absolutely no sign of life thus far this season, but still, a great job of settling down and getting the job done.
- Offense may really get clicking at some point. There's pop through the lineup, and there's a fair bit of consistency.
Things not to like:
- People getting hurt already. Never a good sign. Inevitable, but never good.
- Offense inconsistent. Then again, it's only the first week, so it's hard to judge. Despite the pop present in the lineup, the power hasn't been there yet. On the other hand, lots of doubles being hit, and that's never a bad thing.

Religion in the Jury Room:
I'm working on and through the Fourth Circuit's decision in Robinson v. Polk and the Colorado Supreme Court's decision in People v. Harlan. They have a concern in common, central to Harlan and a part of Robinson.
It's befuddling how one court can get it so right, and the other so very wrong -- using startlingly similar reasoning. Granted, the one that "got it wrong" may have gotten it right had it been in a more enviable position, one from which it had greater latitude, but still -- amazing.
